As much as you try to reduce your carbon footprint, there will likely be some carbon emissions that are unavoidable. Only once one has made diligent efforts to reduce their footprint as much as possible should carbon offsets be considered.

Carbon offsetting is a way to take carbon out of the atmosphere, to make up for the carbon that one is putting into the atmosphere. A basic example of a carbon offset is planting a tree, which takes CO2 out of the atmosphere and stores it. If your home or congregation has the space to plant trees, they can be a great way to take carbon from the atmosphere! However, most carbon offsets come from external companies, where one purchases units of carbon equivalent to the amount of carbon they output, and the company promises to store that amount of carbon.

Carbon offsets have been controversial as they can be a method of "greenwashing": appearing environmentally friendly while doing little to actually reduce carbon emissions or make a serious effort to reduce environmental impact. Organizations and individuals are able to buy carbon offsets, which are often relatively cheap, and continue emitting as much carbon as they would like while claiming "neutrality" using their offsets. While carbon offsets can be a helpful tool for making an impact, it is important to reduce as much carbon as possible before using offsets. If you do purchase carbon offsets, it is important to make sure that you are purchasing offsets that have strong standards and third-party verification.

There are a number of organizations that provide third-party verification for carbon offsets, helping to ensure that carbon offsets are reputable and that the consumer's money is going toward the intended purpose of reducing carbon emissions. Some examples of organizations offering certifications include Green-e, Gold Standard, Verra, and the American Carbon Registry. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market offers 10 criteria that make up a good carbon offset:

  1. Effective governance: the program has good systems and processes to ensure the quality of carbon credits
  2. Tracking: the program has a system for registering and uniquely identifying credits to ensure that carbon credits can be distinguished from each other and identified clearly
  3. Transparency: the program provides clear, understandable and comprehensive information on the mitigation efforts funded by the credit
  4. Robust independent third-party validation and verification: the program requires outside verification for all of the programs they fund
  5. Additionality: the activities funded by carbon credits would not have occurred without funding from the purchase of carbon credits
  6. Permanence: the emission reduction or removal funded by carbon credit should be permanent, and where there is a risk of reversal, those risks should be addressed
  7. Robust quantification of emission reductions and removals: the reduction activity funded by the credit should be thoroughly quantified based on scientific methods
  8. No double-counting: the activity funded by carbon credits should only be counted once as achieving emissions reductions
  9. Sustainable development benefits and safeguards: the funded programs should comply with and go beyond industry best practices on social and environmental safeguards, and deliver on positive sustainable development
  10. Contribution toward net zero transition: the program should avoid contributing to the longevity of high-carbon technologies or practices that are incompatible with global emissions reductions targets
