The Situation

Located in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, Trinity Church is a mission-oriented congregation of faith, deeply dedicated to resilience and broader community collaboration. Hurricanes and heavy rain caused flooding from the nearby Deerfield River in the past, leading environmental justice and sustainability to be a high priority in the area. The Trinity Church congregation lives out their faith through contributing to environmental disaster preparedness and greater community resilience. They identified energy-saving opportunities to support their mission and took action to improve energy efficiency, update their heating system with heat pumps, install a commercial-grade generator, and offer greater support to the broader community.

Resilience and Energy Efficiency: Key Actions

As the surrounding towns, Shelburne and Buckland, are increasing weather preparedness, local community groups are joining to build a network of community resilience. Not only does Trinity Church open its doors to provide these groups with meeting spaces, but it aims to become an emergency hub for those in need — offering shelter, energy, and food.

  • Solar panels were installed to offset carbon emissions and provide clean energy to the grid.
  • A 100% covered weatherization project improved their energy efficiency and capacity.
  • 2 electric vehicle chargers are being installed for free thanks to a United Methodist Church grant.
  • Their commercial-grade kitchen and community meals programs are ideal for emergency situations and broad community support.
  • In 2026, Trinity Church launched their capital campaign, "Building Joy": a community-wide resiliency effort to raise $250,000 to support essential projects that will enhance worship, expand digital ministry, and strengthen the church's ability to serve neighbors in times of need.

Results

Through various congregation-led projects and outside programs, Trinity Church has accomplished several impactful steps toward their goal of climate resilience and clean energy.

  • When installing the solar panels, the congregation chose a Solar Power Purchase Agreement (SPPA). This allowed them to avoid high upfront installation costs and maintenance responsibilities, but receive stable electricity at a lower cost.
  • Through their Mass Save weatherization project, Trinity Church received $6,500 worth of free insulation in their bell tower, office spaces, and basement — all in a single day. This project increases energy efficiency and the congregation is excited to see their lower energy bill in the upcoming months.
  • The United Methodist Church grant covers installation for 2 electric vehicle chargers, which provides the community with greater access to fossil fuel-dependent vehicles.

Ongoing Projects and Future Goals

To become a true community emergency hub, Trinity Church is currently working with the broader community and municipality to install a commercial-grade generator. This will allow the church to keep its doors open when the power goes out and provide electricity and heating/cooling to anyone in need, furthering their mission of caring for others.

The Broad Mission and Work

Trinity Church serves a mission to Gather as God's people to Grow in faith, love, and service, and to Go into the world as disciples. This mission is lived through their dedication to Whole Community approaches and being part of collective action to build climate resilience and improve disaster readiness, response, and recovery. Moreover, congregation members run an active Creation Care team, volunteer to care for their Memorial Garden, and collect used clothes to donate and reduce unnecessary waste.

Learning Opportunities

  • Unexpected benefits. The congregation initially reached out to Mass Save about heat pumps, but their broad interest in energy efficiency opened the doors to a conversation about weatherization. Trinity Church received free installation and are thrilled with the results of the project.
  • Curiosity leads to support. Through asking questions and being curious about what opportunities exist to support resilience-building projects, Trinity Church found incentives and support they didn't know existed. They urge others to reach out to organizations, such as Massachusetts Interfaith Power & Light, who can help make these kinds of projects easier, and to see what other incredible opportunities are out there — it just takes welcoming the conversation to make change.

Their Message to Communities of Faith

Trinity Church hopes other congregations will collaborate with their local organizations and groups to better support and serve the whole community of their area. Through creating a network of groups oriented around a shared mission, incredible work can be accomplished towards justice for all of Creation.
