A message from our Executive Director, Rev. Michael Reed

Dear Friends,

Over the past seven months as Executive Director with Massachusetts Interfaith Power & Light (MassIPL), I’ve had the privilege of meeting over a hundred people across the Commonwealth—people of all faiths, spiritual paths, and traditions.

In each conversation, common threads emerge. We are deeply concerned about our changing climate and the growing inequality it brings. This year especially has been so hard—hard to believe that our religious values make a difference for a just future with a livable climate.

And yet.

And yet in every conversation, there is hope. When we look within—within our communities, our faith traditions, and our own spheres of influence—we discover great power and light.

In the midst of challenge, there is tremendous opportunity. In fact, in the past 18 months, MassIPL has helped more faith communities take action on climate change than perhaps at any time in our 20-year history.

When so much seems to be moving backward, we are rising to meet the moment. We must keep our communities moving forward.

If you are someone who cares deeply about faith and climate, I'm writing to ask for your help. MassIPL is launching our "Power & Light" campaign. Between now and the end of the year, we're raising funds to step forward as a leading voice and trusted resource for faith and the environment.

Will you join us as power and light this year?

Your donation will:

  • Create a more just future. We’re offering education, decarbonizing buildings, planting trees, and building interfaith partnerships in environmental justice communities.

  • Make houses of worship greener. Our MassSave partnership has helped 300 congregations save $6 million and cut emissions! Help us expand and grow this effort.

  • Open climate conversations. We’re planning new interfaith gatherings and advocacy efforts to amplify faith voices and build bridges for action in Massachusetts.

  • Empower the next generation. Our Youth Ambassador and internship programs equip young adults to lead in their communities for creation care and clean energy jobs.

MassIPL is hard at work to expand these efforts and step into new possibilities. The need is urgent for a state-wide religious and moral voice for Creation. The opportunity is before us.

My wife and I give to MassIPL every month because we believe in this mission, personally and spiritually. Call me biased, but I’m continually amazed by how far our work reaches and how much good it accomplishes. Every dollar given to MassIPL multiplies its impact, helping faith communities save thousands of dollars, cut literal tons of carbon, and make a real difference for environmental justice.

Donors often ask how changes in the federal government affect our work. Thankfully, MassIPL doesn’t rely on federal funding. But state and local grant programs are now under immense strain—we recently applied for one grant with 950 other applicants! More than ever, we depend on donors like you to keep this work moving forward.

In that spirit, here are three ways you can help:

  • Make a one-time gift. $500 funds a Youth Ambassador project; $250 supports a faith-and-climate event; $100 sponsors the membership of a house of worship with limited resources. Every gift, no matter the size, moves us forward.

  • Go above and beyond. As MassIPL expands its work, please consider adding 10% or 20% to your usual gift to help us meet new goals and launch new programs.

  • Become a monthly donor. Your ongoing commitment ensures that we can continue this critical work year-round. You can set up a recurring donation by giving online.

Please give today by clicking the button below.

Thank you for your vision and support. Together, we are building a future where faith communities lead the charge on climate justice and environmental sustainability. We will rise to meet today’s challenges and work toward a better tomorrow for all.

With gratitude and hope,

Rev. Michael Reed
